#WEPFF - In Too Deep February Challenge Winners

How many times can you use the words outstanding, amazing, or inspiring to describe the entries for another WEP challenge? Apparently, dozens, and each time they fit. This month was no exception.
In Too Deep could have meant anything. A wrong decision with no way out. Or a literal fight with deep water. Or whatever so many clever minds made it.

Pat Garcia – always engaging, reminded us of the true meaning of the vow 'till death do us part.' Carrie Golden – reminded us that life is just too short! Christopher Scott introduced us to nanopunk and told a gripping tale of self-sacrifice. Toi Thomas – reminded us to be careful what we wish for especially at the moment of death. Keith’s Ramblings – beautifully presented, every journey, even for a princess takes trust and sacrifice.

L G Keltner – wrote a cautionary, yet superbly subtle tale - don’t mess with the God of Love! Hilary – wrote eloquently of conquering your greatest fear. Pat Hatt – delivered a gut retching close-up of pure evil. Kalpanaa – reminded us that the journey to happiness is seldom an easy one. DG Hudson – clarified the price of revenge which raised so many questions in readers. RasmaRaisters – showed us that what the heart wants, the heart wants.

Sally – in a combination of prose and poetry, reminded us that even when you’re not looking for love, it can land right in your lap. Adura – a poem that showed with true love there are no barriers. Nidhi – wrote a poem, redolent with emotion, about an unbelievable crime and hope. Deborah Drucker – pointed out that no one is too busy for love. Desk 49 – wrote poetically of love, forget expectations – just fall… J Lenni Dorner – shared a delightful tale about the meaning of Karma.

Roland Yeomans – reminds us that beauty is only skin deep unless you find the mists. Dolorah – Lunatic Walks Into A Bar – investigating murder is a daunting task. Bernadette Braganza – saw humor in a few words of playscript that lifted the heart. Elizabeth Otten – reminded us the journey to love is varied and usually offers many challenges.

And now to the announcements:

WEP-HALLOWEEN DARK PLACES CHALLENGE WINNERS!

AMAZING!

HORRIFYING!
THOUGHT PROVOKING!
 along with
SUPERIOR WRITING!

We could go on and on. The stories, poetry, and images presented for the 2017 WEP Halloween – Dark Places Challenge are beyond description.

From the talented L. G. Keltner, who describes in explicit detail the fear we all have regarding strangers, but especially when it comes to our children in her tale  A Dark Man in a Dark Room. Then one of our veterans, Pat Garcia, brought the emotion with her story of a survivor haunted by horrific nightmares in A Dark Night of the Soul. Newcomer Carrie Anne Golden – hit a cord in all of us (bitches) with her ode to the darkness within in Black Heart.
Positive thinker Hilary Melton-Butcher brought us to Dark Places through images and poetry that highlight the violent sacrifice of martyrdom.  And horror queen Laura Clipson’s tale of Darkness details the caution we all need to take when love is too good to be true.

But folks there are more, many, many more so please go HERE to find the dark delights our writers are sharing with you this Halloween!

But we are all here to find out who took us to the darkest of places, and to that end I'm proud to announce the winners!

#WEPFF WRITE…EDIT…PUBLISH… BRIDGES WINNER DEBORAH DRUCKER ON BECOMING A WRITER

We are thrilled to have Deborah Drucker, the winner of the WEP June Challenge - BRIDGES
here to discuss her writing journey. Her winning piece is titled

Congratulations, Deborah!

Have I become a writer?

I definitely did not always aspire to be or think of myself as a writer. I have spent most of my life being other things.

Going through a recent life transition, I started to read what others were writing about. I felt like I was crossing over into unknown territory and needed some guides. One of the websites I found was open to submissions to post on their site. I submitted a post and was published. Another well known writer accepted a guest post from me.

This was very exciting.

Would this be the new direction?

I started my own blog. Visions of being an overnight success swirled through my head. You would think it would be nothing but up from then on. It has taken longer than I expected. I do have a following but haven't gone viral yet. :D  I decided to blog about what interests me and feel strongly about.  Gathering a blog following is very time consuming and takes away from other interests. I need a lot of open space to reflect and down time to write.

I discovered I could write Flash Fiction and was encouraged when some of the pieces were well received by other writers. It was a challenge to write a story in 100 words or so. I learned that it is possible and it has shown me how you can trim your writing down to the bone. Some of my stories are completely imaginary while others have some basis in issues I care about.

I went through several of my flash fiction stories with a 100-word limit and picked this one which is kind of fun. I wrote this for the Friday Fictioneers hosted by Rachel Wisoff-Fields.

This image provided by Connie Gayer was the prompt. My story was inspired by a piece in the LA Times about the mudslides after the rain:

Copyright Connie Gayer

Disturb At Your Own Risk

The wild fires had prepared the site, El Nino rains brought the mudslides, and the hillsides gave up some of their secrets. Two skulls and a femur were found by some mountain hikers. The police said they would open their missing persons' files.

The call came in to the Sheriff’s Station on a quiet Sunday morning.

Another hiker had spotted something. The deputy dispatched to the scene called it in, I think this is a job for Animal Control. Yeah, it looks like a tentacle. Wait a minute, it’s moving!  The dispatcher heard a muffled scream and then nothing.

***

I feel that now I am moving into another phase of my development as a writer and wanting to progress into longer pieces. I need more of a challenge than writing short Flash Fiction and blogging. Who knows if this will lead to anything, but I would like to find out.

I want to be brave, and I want to enjoy writing. I have come to realize that you can write about anything, even small everyday things. The secret for me is that the topic has to inspire me.

***
Thank you, Deborah, loved the post.
What about you, readers and writers,
does the topic have to inspire you?
