Hi all! A reminder or two from the previous post...
WEP Assistants:
Pat Garcia will count the comments for the Best Commenter badge. Comment counting will cease at midnight on Thursday, September 1st NY time, which gives you over a week to read/comment. And most importantly, make sure you read the updated CRITIQUE PAGE above before commenting.
Bernadette Braganza is helping to write blurbs. That will help Nila and myself immensely.
If you'd like to help in this or a later challenge, please email me at: den.covey@gmail.com or leave a comment.

Our first critiquer for August is Chrys Fey. She's offering one of the following - a First Chapter critique, a magazine submission critique or a future WEP submission critique. Refer to previous post for more details regarding Chrys.

Have tweeted! 🌹
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI love that I can go in order and pick up where I left off without having to remember which links were live or not! :)
ReplyDeleteLoving the entries so far - already so many different takes on the theme!
Yes Jemi the new/old format lends itself to ease of reading. Can’t wait to read them all.
DeleteHi, I'm new to WEP.
ReplyDeleteI was intrigued with this month's photo prompt. There's something about a red wheelbarrow. I am enjoying the diversity of stories based on this theme - they are clever, creative, intriguing, and entertaining.
Hello there. It’s lovely to have you. Thanks for commenting on my Paris excerpt. Can’t wait to get around and read yours.
DeleteWelcome to WEP!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteOMG - thank you for securing your website.
DeleteThe above comment was about your site's security... and as I clicked publish, and looked above, I saw the change had been done. Bravo.
If there's a chance you can share this info with your wonderful followers I would greatly appreciate it. I did a post about it, but it only reaches those following me.
I'm trying to get the word out. Again, thank you for making the change. :) :)
Yikes, I think I'm loosing my last two remaining marbles... seems like your site is still Not Secure - how could my eyes be so deceived - I'm truly flummoxed, because I thought I saw the little lock. Oh well... I'm sure in due time things will be "locked down" if I'm not "locked up" first. hahahaha
DeleteThis is quite bizarre - indeed the lock shows up after the comment has been entered. "Yet, how is that possible?" she mused, wearily scratching her head.
DeleteWhy would comments show up in a secure link, yet the website doesn't... hmmm, I will be pondering this and trying to figure it out. Definitely strange.
MYSTERY SOLVED - seems I was accessing WEB through links on my site which still had the HTTP rather then your new HTTPS address.
DeleteWell, I changed all the pertinent links - in my posts, on my reading list, in my blog roll... yikes!... and all is well in my corner of the universe. For a minute a least!
LOL
I thoroughly enjoyed Dixie Jo Jarchow's take, but cannot leave a comment.
ReplyDeleteThere doesn't seem to be a comment form. I tried as well.
DeleteCouldn't leave a comment on Dixie's entry either. No place for comments there. I just pressed the Like button, to show I've been there.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I wanted to say I liked the peach tree at the end. Deceptive opening too.
DeleteI didn't even go from here - I subscribe to her blog and can comment on her other posts.
DeleteI have emailed Dixie re this.
ReplyDeleteMy piece is up, but it may take me a day or two to starts reading others. Getting swamped by emails, and I have deadlines. Apologies in advance to those I don't visit.
ReplyDeleteYou can only do your best Roland. Take care.
DeleteI'm looking forward to reading it!
DeleteManaged to read them all. WEP comes before IWSG in the heading and in the deadlines. Back to editing.
DeleteSadly I seem to be having trouble commenting at Kalpanas site too.
ReplyDeleteYes Sue, I just tried and it seemed to go nowhere. A shame.
DeleteAgain? OMG - I am so tired of this. I even changed my theme to accomodate comments suspecting that was the problem. I'm heartbroken.
DeleteStay calm Kalpanaa. Anyone reading this comment in the c-box.
DeleteWeirdly, I can leave a comment on the previous post. I will try again on the Red Wheelbarrow later today and if that fails will leave my comment on the wrong post.
DeleteYes that worked. It really is weird that that was possible but the WEP post is rejecting comments.
DeleteWell I've checked my website again and again with my webhost. Comments are coming in from people other than on this link up. And on other blog posts of mine. So there may be something wrong with the inlinkz link or it may be because of http versus https.
DeleteMany of the blogs I visited show a NOT SECURE warning and that may be the issue.
Anyway - if visitors can read the story that's great. I hunger for comments but it seems to be beyond my ability to figure this out.
Managed to comment (Friday 1:30 EST) so hopefully it's working!
DeleteI also tried, unsuccessfully - though it accepted the comment and all the info and appeared it to go through. At first I thought it might have to do with comment moderation being in effect on the blog in question.
DeleteI'm a secure blog. I don't think the status of a blog's security should affect the ability to leave a comment.
However, I encourage everyone to change their HTTPS setting, in Blogger, to Yes - to ensure your blogs are safe, and that data is encrypted to prevent hacking.
I was able to comment on Kalpana's site, but I didn't go there through the link. I decided to login there independently from my browser - and it worked.
DeleteOlga, I tried that and it worked.
DeleteFor anyone wanting Kalpana's direct URL it is: https://www.kalpanaawrites.com
or I've added it as a direct link: Kalpana's website Just click on this and it will take you there. Good luck.
This is awesome Jenny. Thanks.
DeleteCouldn't login to 22. Regine Karpel. It says "Server not found." Something is wrong with the link, I guess. I'm going to see what the design view shows. Maybe I could fix it.
ReplyDeleteRegine Karpel's is defeating me too. Link problems?
ReplyDeleteNope, I can't fix it. :(
ReplyDeleteI’ve emailed her. Let’s hope she is reachable.
Delete#22 doesn't work and I can't comment on 13 or 17. 13 there is no way to comment and 17 says error. fyi.
ReplyDeleteYep Pat. You'll see in the comments everyone is having the same probs. All I can do is email people and they have to fix it. I know it's frustrating to commenters as we hate wasting time writing thoughtful comments which go nowhere, but the best thing is to leave a comment here or in the C-box.
Delete#22 is probably http://www.rsrue.blogspot.com/
Deleteinstead of www.rsrue.blogspot.con
But I didn't find any red wheelbarrow entry
Mine is finally up! I had to write something new - the one I was working on wanted to be a short story and refused to cut to a flash. Thanks for the story prompt, lol. I will read all the entries over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donna. Sometimes a story won’t be tamed.
DeleteThat's happened to me plenty of times! Can't wait to read your entry!
Deleteok, I get the in-linkz redirect with every link on the list - including my own. What's up with that?
ReplyDeleteIt will then take you to the post in question (except for No 22)
DeleteThanks EC. Yep. To keep it free we have to endure ads. I get them on my phone but not on laptop.
DeleteReading the above comments about the Link redirect delay - might I suggest adding a comment below the link list advising of said delay. It would be helpful to those coming by for the first time.
ReplyDeleteIt confused me initially, then I realized, as stated on the link tool, there is a 5 second delay to get to the blog one is trying to reach. Once I figured it out I was good to go.
Ah... the learning curve just keeps on giving. LOL
Thanks for that Jenny. Will do.
DeleteKALPANAA. I saw others had commented so I tried again but it couldn't post it. Maybe it randomly accepts some and rejects others. Here is my comment:
ReplyDeleteHey Kalpanaa. Looks like your commenting has been fixed. Hope so. I posted an indepth comment the other day and I'm not certain I can recall everything.
But I loved the whimsy in this story. Whimsy accepted as 'normal'. Magical realism. Your flash is a real comment on family dynamics. So much simmering below the surface that becomes obvious in the speech, especially the mother's. I thought it was heartbreaking for Kelly. But you've left us guessing as to the why. That is good. Perhaps we can meet this dysfunctional family again. I for one would like to.
Thanks for posting to WEP and thanks for trying to get your commenting sorted.
I'm also having difficulty with leaving a comment on Kalpanaa's entry, so I'll leave my thoughts here as well.
DeleteKalpanaa, your entry was marvelous! First of all, the writing here is amazing! You used vivid descriptions that really pulled me into the scene.
I really felt for Kelly here. Sometimes family can be difficult, especially when you don't fit in with the rest of them. Yes, I can see how people might not know how to respond to Kelly at first, but I would hope family would try to accept her. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. You did an excellent job of conveying her pain.
This was a creative take on the prompt! Well done!
Thank you. I'll share your lovely comment on my blog.
DeleteMaybe I'm a dense puppy, but I couldn't find a place to leave a comment on Dixie Jo's blog. Her story was very realistic, her characters very well fleshed out. It was a good read.
ReplyDeleteNo Cie there’s no place to comment at Dixie’s. She’s hoping to fix it.
DeleteI think/I hope I have left a comment on all posts except for Dixie Jo's and Regine Karpal's posts. If I left anyone out, please let me know.
ReplyDeleteAnd huge thanks to everyone for some most excellent reading.
Well done EC. First past the post.
DeleteI seem to be having this issue on J Lenni Dorner and Kalpana's posts as well.
ReplyDeleteWith J Lenni's, you have to navigate through a lot of text before you get to the comment part.
DeleteI just saved yours from spam. Sorry about that. You're the only person it put in there. I honestly don't know why. Sorry, Bernadette. Comments have been restored though.
DeleteThanks :)
DeleteI first thought that it was a WordPress issue since I had to log out and log-in on two other posts. (This reminds me that I should take a look at my spam section too 🤔)
First I’ve heard of J Lenni problem but there are several comments re Kalpanaa above along with a solution. Try it.
ReplyDeleteI was also unable to Kalpana's site. It was a very beautiful piece, lovely setting and atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteThat should be comment on Kalpana's site. Ugh. I'll blame it on my blood sugar and the stress of moving.
DeleteYes a common problem but if you look above Jenny Pearson found a solution.
DeleteHi Denise,
DeleteI'll enter the direct link for Kalpana's site here too: KALPANA’S WEBSITE
Anyone wishing to leave a comment for Kalpana can click the link above.
When it opens scroll down a bit, her WEP piece is on the left side - click on it to open it. You can now leave comments there.
Thank you @Jenny.
DeleteMy pleasure @Kalpana :)
Deletei found it was a 'http' vs 'https' issue. I thought that changeover was done automatically. It isn't. You have to go to Settings. Basic and click 'yes' to 'https'. Then my comment posted.
DeleteI've commented on everyone's except for Dixie's and of course what was #22 but didn't have a Red Wheelbarrow entry.
ReplyDeleteDixie's is now fixed.
DeleteI have commented on everyone's post except for Dixie also.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Dixie has fixed her system now.
DeleteThank you for letting us know. It was a powerful piece and I was so glad to be able to tell her so.
DeleteAnd... just commented on Dixie's story.
DeleteEvery stone has been turned over, looked under, and commented on... wine in hand, I'm outta here.
Smiles to all.
Thank you Jenny!
DeleteDoes commenting on this post count towards the challenge??? What if I reply to the other comments?
ReplyDeletenew follower.
Commenting here doesn't count. You actually have to post something for the prompt, in this case RED WHEELBARROW, to be counted. It's too late for this month, but I invite you back for October, our horror month. I see you mentioned Halloween on your blog!
Deletefor Kalpana:
ReplyDeleteWow, what a toxic environment. Home is not always a happy place, what a shame. You left a lot of intriguing tidbits to keep reader interest. Well done.
Checking your websites today, I see at least half of you are showing 'Not secure'. I hope you will follow the instructions in my email. You're actually putting your blog visitors at risk until you change your setting to 'https'. A simple change. The Pearson Report left detailed instructions at the end of her RED WHEELBARROW post.
ReplyDeleteThis is why we've been having commenting problems.
While it is certainly a desirable step it doesn't eliminate commenting issues. My site has been secure for quite a while and Kalpana's blog has been giving me grief.
DeleteYes Sue, but Kalpanaa's site shows it is not secure.
DeleteDenise is right! We all need to SECURE our websites/blogs.
ReplyDeleteI've put info on this HERE - a short 2:49 video, and easy to follow instructions are there.
When we visit NOT SECURE websites our data is not encrypted on route and can potentially be hacked. This should be of concern to all of us.
As Denise said, in her email, go to Settings, Basics, and change HTTPS Redirect from No (default) to Yes in the drop down menu. It is automatically saved, and your blog will be secure.
Thanks Jenny!
DeleteMAKING YOUR SITE SECURE:
ReplyDeleteThe instructions Jenny and I gave are for Blogger.
To make your Word Press site secure:
Use https on your WordPress site
Step 1 - Log into WordPress and go to Plugins. Log into your WordPress dashboard and click Plugins in the menu to the left. ...
Step 2 - Install the Really Simple SSL plugin. Type in Really Simple SSL in the search field. ...
Step 3 - Activate the plugin. ...
Step 4 - Done!
Hope this helps someone. I'm off to see if it works on my redundant WP site.
KALPANAA: A comment from Pat Garcia:
ReplyDeleteI felt so sad as I began reading your story because I could feel the rejection Kelly felt coming from her mom. You did an excellent job portraying kelly's emotional world. I wonder will she ever find out why her mother dislikes her so much. I suspect that she's not her mother's child but that is her real father and he is too weak to protect her from the hurting comments and mistreatment of his wife.
Thanks for writing such a poignant story.
Shalom aleichem,
Pat G
I'm so bummed I wasn't able to contribute this time around, but a least I got to enjoy reading all the submissions. Good stuff. I look forward to the next one; hopefully I'll be able to contribute. Best of luck to all who submitted.
ReplyDeleteMissed you Toi. Thanks for visiting my blog. Hope you can make it in October.
DeleteOlga's piece knocked it out of the park!
ReplyDeleteI've commented on Dixie's too so I have now managed to leave a comment on every blog that participated.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kalpanaa. So appreciated.
DeleteJust a quick note to say that I'm still working my way through commenting on all the entries-I think I have about three left to read. I apologise to everyone for being so slow! I've really enjoyed the diverse mix of genres this time. Several entries are outstanding and memorable.
ReplyDeleteThank you Anstice for making the effort.
DeletePlease let me know if you’re looking for a article writer for your site. You have some really great posts and I feel I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d absolutely love to write some material for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please send me an email if interested. Thank you! sports Information online
ReplyDeleteIt was very useful for me. Keep sharing such ideas in the future as well. This was actually what I was looking for, and I am glad to.
