#WEP/IWSG Sign Up for August Challenge - RED WHEELBARROW - Add your name and DL after you post on your blog.

Hi all! A reminder or two from the previous post...

WEP Assistants:

Pat Garcia will count the comments for the Best Commenter badge. Comment counting will cease at midnight on Thursday, September 1st NY time, which gives you over a week to read/comment. When you've finished reading, it would be helpful if you left a comment on the sign up post to tell us you're done. PLEASE everyone, make sure comments are allowed on your blog. And most importantly, make sure you read the updated CRITIQUE PAGE above before commenting.

Bernadette Braganza is helping to write blurbs. That will help Nila and myself immensely.

If you'd like to help in this or a later challenge, please email me at: den.covey@gmail.com or leave a comment.

Signing up:
Add your name to the list. Direct LinkDirect link only! So there's no confusion, add your WRITER NAME (not the name of the prompt, please), your email, and your URL that leads directly to your entry.

New Prizes:

Nick Wilford continues as judge for the WEP contest.

August is the month we introduce our CRITIQUE prize. We've approached several editors/published authors/critiquers to line them up to reward you for your efforts! The winning entry from now on will be the lucky recipient of a critique. Check out our list in our sidebar to which more editors will be added as times are confirmed.

Our first critiquer for August is Chrys Fey. She's offering one of the following - a First Chapter critique, a magazine submission critique or a future WEP submission critique. Refer to previous post for more details regarding Chrys.

Loving the entries so far - already so many different takes on the theme!

  2. Hi, I'm new to WEP.
I was intrigued with this month's photo prompt. There's something about a red wheelbarrow. I am enjoying the diversity of stories based on this theme - they are clever, creative, intriguing, and entertaining.

    3. OMG - thank you for securing your website.

The above comment was about your site's security... and as I clicked publish, and looked above, I saw the change had been done. Bravo.

If there's a chance you can share this info with your wonderful followers I would greatly appreciate it. I did a post about it, but it only reaches those following me.

I'm trying to get the word out. Again, thank you for making the change. :) :)

    4. Yikes, I think I'm loosing my last two remaining marbles... seems like your site is still Not Secure - how could my eyes be so deceived - I'm truly flummoxed, because I thought I saw the little lock. Oh well... I'm sure in due time things will be "locked down" if I'm not "locked up" first. hahahaha

      Delete
    5. This is quite bizarre - indeed the lock shows up after the comment has been entered. "Yet, how is that possible?" she mused, wearily scratching her head.

Why would comments show up in a secure link, yet the website doesn't... hmmm, I will be pondering this and trying to figure it out. Definitely strange.

    6. MYSTERY SOLVED - seems I was accessing WEB through links on my site which still had the HTTP rather then your new HTTPS address.

Well, I changed all the pertinent links - in my posts, on my reading list, in my blog roll... yikes!... and all is well in my corner of the universe. For a minute a least!
      LOL

    4. Weirdly, I can leave a comment on the previous post. I will try again on the Red Wheelbarrow later today and if that fails will leave my comment on the wrong post.

      Delete
    5. Yes that worked. It really is weird that that was possible but the WEP post is rejecting comments.

      Delete
    6. Well I've checked my website again and again with my webhost. Comments are coming in from people other than on this link up. And on other blog posts of mine. So there may be something wrong with the inlinkz link or it may be because of http versus https.
Many of the blogs I visited show a NOT SECURE warning and that may be the issue.
Anyway - if visitors can read the story that's great. I hunger for comments but it seems to be beyond my ability to figure this out.

      Delete
    7. Managed to comment (Friday 1:30 EST) so hopefully it's working!

      Delete
    8. I also tried, unsuccessfully - though it accepted the comment and all the info and appeared it to go through. At first I thought it might have to do with comment moderation being in effect on the blog in question.

I'm a secure blog. I don't think the status of a blog's security should affect the ability to leave a comment.

However, I encourage everyone to change their HTTPS setting, in Blogger, to Yes - to ensure your blogs are safe, and that data is encrypted to prevent hacking.

    9. I was able to comment on Kalpana's site, but I didn't go there through the link. I decided to login there independently from my browser - and it worked.

    10. Olga, I tried that and it worked.

For anyone wanting Kalpana's direct URL it is: https://www.kalpanaawrites.com
or I've added it as a direct link: Kalpana's website Just click on this and it will take you there. Good luck.

    1. Yep Pat. You'll see in the comments everyone is having the same probs. All I can do is email people and they have to fix it. I know it's frustrating to commenters as we hate wasting time writing thoughtful comments which go nowhere, but the best thing is to leave a comment here or in the C-box.

  13. Reading the above comments about the Link redirect delay - might I suggest adding a comment below the link list advising of said delay. It would be helpful to those coming by for the first time.

It confused me initially, then I realized, as stated on the link tool, there is a 5 second delay to get to the blog one is trying to reach. Once I figured it out I was good to go.

Ah... the learning curve just keeps on giving. LOL

  14. KALPANAA. I saw others had commented so I tried again but it couldn't post it. Maybe it randomly accepts some and rejects others. Here is my comment:

Hey Kalpanaa. Looks like your commenting has been fixed. Hope so. I posted an indepth comment the other day and I'm not certain I can recall everything.
But I loved the whimsy in this story. Whimsy accepted as 'normal'. Magical realism. Your flash is a real comment on family dynamics. So much simmering below the surface that becomes obvious in the speech, especially the mother's. I thought it was heartbreaking for Kelly. But you've left us guessing as to the why. That is good. Perhaps we can meet this dysfunctional family again. I for one would like to.
Thanks for posting to WEP and thanks for trying to get your commenting sorted.

    1. I'm also having difficulty with leaving a comment on Kalpanaa's entry, so I'll leave my thoughts here as well.

Kalpanaa, your entry was marvelous! First of all, the writing here is amazing! You used vivid descriptions that really pulled me into the scene.

I really felt for Kelly here. Sometimes family can be difficult, especially when you don't fit in with the rest of them. Yes, I can see how people might not know how to respond to Kelly at first, but I would hope family would try to accept her. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. You did an excellent job of conveying her pain.

This was a creative take on the prompt! Well done!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Commenting here doesn't count. You actually have to post something for the prompt, in this case RED WHEELBARROW, to be counted. It's too late for this month, but I invite you back for October, our horror month. I see you mentioned Halloween on your blog!

  23. for Kalpana:

Wow, what a toxic environment. Home is not always a happy place, what a shame. You left a lot of intriguing tidbits to keep reader interest. Well done.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Checking your websites today, I see at least half of you are showing 'Not secure'. I hope you will follow the instructions in my email. You're actually putting your blog visitors at risk until you change your setting to 'https'. A simple change. The Pearson Report left detailed instructions at the end of her RED WHEELBARROW post.

This is why we've been having commenting problems.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. While it is certainly a desirable step it doesn't eliminate commenting issues. My site has been secure for quite a while and Kalpana's blog has been giving me grief.

      Delete
    2. Yes Sue, but Kalpanaa's site shows it is not secure.

      Delete
  25. Denise is right! We all need to SECURE our websites/blogs.

I've put info on this HERE - a short 2:49 video, and easy to follow instructions are there.

When we visit NOT SECURE websites our data is not encrypted on route and can potentially be hacked. This should be of concern to all of us.

As Denise said, in her email, go to Settings, Basics, and change HTTPS Redirect from No (default) to Yes in the drop down menu. It is automatically saved, and your blog will be secure.

    ReplyDelete
  26. MAKING YOUR SITE SECURE:
The instructions Jenny and I gave are for Blogger.
To make your Word Press site secure:

Use https on your WordPress site
Step 1 - Log into WordPress and go to Plugins. Log into your WordPress dashboard and click Plugins in the menu to the left. ...
Step 2 - Install the Really Simple SSL plugin. Type in Really Simple SSL in the search field. ...
    Step 3 - Activate the plugin. ...
    Step 4 - Done!

Hope this helps someone. I'm off to see if it works on my redundant WP site.

  27. KALPANAA: A comment from Pat Garcia:

I felt so sad as I began reading your story because I could feel the rejection Kelly felt coming from her mom. You did an excellent job portraying kelly's emotional world. I wonder will she ever find out why her mother dislikes her so much. I suspect that she's not her mother's child but that is her real father and he is too weak to protect her from the hurting comments and mistreatment of his wife.

Thanks for writing such a poignant story.

    Shalom aleichem,

    Pat G
