Welcome to the WEP - Write...Edit...Publish The End is the Beginning December Challenge.

As we head into the holiday season, our minds can focus on year's end and perhaps new beginnings. 

This December, WEP dedicates the month to thinking about life, taking stock, where we're at at this point in time. Perhaps you'll be inspired to write a flashback, perhaps there's a cascading change you're going through or one approaching, perhaps there's a branching off point that could be either an end or a beginning. Whatever strikes you, you have a choice in the way you present it -- a flash fiction, a non-fiction piece, poetry, a photo essay or get your feelings onto a canvas and show us some artwork...

AWE AND WONDER

When Yolanda sent me the email telling me that I had won the Halloween WEP, I was shocked (my first reaction was to reply asking if she had sent the email to the right person).  After assuring me no mistake had been made, she reminded me that I was expected to do a guest post - and the subject was up to me.

So I am going to write about what WEP means to me.  All of us wear labels.  Some are foisted on us, some we choose, some we aspire to.  The label I am most comfortable with is appreciator.

I don't remember how I first found WEP but I loved it from my very first visit.  Reading is one of my obsessions and I was given a giant smorgasbord of excellent writing to revel in.  Polished, imaginative pieces.  All based around a common theme, all so very different.  Many of them find permanent niches in my head and heart.

 So I bookmarked the site, read and cheered.  D.G Hudson encouraged me to dip my toes in further.  I love words but am a dabbler rather than a writer.  I surprised myself, took the challenge and jumped in.

And was met with nothing but kindness and support.  Incredible and generous support.

Since then I have participated in some challenges but always read all of the submissions even when I wasn't able to participate.  I read them with awe and wonder, marvelling at the talent and expertise on display.  In the challenges I have entered I feel inadequate, over-awed and outclassed from the first piece I read until the last.

But I need to stress that inadequacy is a personal foible.   The organisers, the other participants and the readers have never fanned those embers in any way.

WEP gives me excellent reading, a safe place to play and incredible support.  Who can ask for more?

So huge thanks are in order.  To Denise, to Yolanda, to Olga, to Nilanjana and to all of you who participate.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  You have enriched my world.

#WEPFF August Challenge WINNER, Pat Hatt, tells us where he gets his inspiration!

Hi all!

It's a thrill to have Pat Hatt take over the blog today as August's winner.  I asked him to tell us about his story inspiration as this story was a different journey for our Rhyme King.

PASSIONATE NIGHTS – This flash grabbed us by the throat and didn't let go. A completely scary, deep, dark flash where horror came out to play. Certainly a REUNION with a difference.

I’m being put to work again. You’d think I was getting paid or something. Two posts in a year. Hmm, the cat does 388 in a year. I think I can put out two for WEP. I should stop thinking, or whining, and get to it, huh?

I have done the whole advice thing. I gave so little with a lot. Wasn’t that impressive? No? I guess I will have to try harder. Maybe I’ll go with inspiration. Where does it come from? How does it form? How do you go with it? My, you sure are full of questions.

Inspiration is the key to anything creative. At least if you want to make it half-decent or beyond. If you are miserable doing something or flat out hate it, then you won’t be inspired and…what’s the point? Unless it is your job, which has a point, to live, then why put yourself through that?

 Now that I have your head spinning with inspiration, let’s go further. Where does it come from? What makes a rhyming cat go all serial killer? The answer is easy. Beats the heck out of me. The voices in my head tell me what wants to be told and away I go. I suppose they like to stretch their skill as well.

That’s very helpful, huh? Now you will be able to find inspiration on a whim. Just listen to the voices in your head. The one telling you right now that this nut needs to be put on medication. Wait. Are there none up there? Score a win for me. But guess what? Some days there are. Many people stick a phone to their head. You have a voice in your ear. Listen and take it in, maybe a story shall spin. Maybe even a rhyme. It could happen any time.

And that is the long and short of it. It is happening most any time. You only need to look. How does that work? Easy peasy.

You could look at a tree and see a face. Bingo! Spirit of the Willow Tree.

You could look at a chair and see a butt crease in it. Bingo! The Day The Fat Guy Sat Across From Me.

You could rip off a hangnail. Bingo! My Blood is Blue. Germs That Seeped In and Gave Me Super Powers. How I Lost My Finger. The Four Fingered Man. The Fourth Finger. Where Does The Ring Go?

You could see a chimney. Bingo! What Lives Within. Built With Bricks of Lore.

 I could go on and on and on. The voices in my head may get mad at me for sharing all of their ideas though. I don’t want them yapping all night, so we’ll stop there. The Voice In The Night. Okay, now I’ll stop and get on with it.

Best of all, these bingos don’t cost money to do. You can just look around and get to thinking. Everything can have a story. The only way they come out half-arsed or as boring as actual bingo, sorry bingo lovers, is if you let them. With a little twist and turn, everything can take a twist and turn.

Does that make sense? If not, now you can have a story about how nuts this guy is. The nutty blogger who wrote an inspiration post that made no sense and ruined my life. You may want to work on that title though, as it is a bit wordy.

The wordy title that caused me to choke to death. A bit less wordy with that one.

Did you see though? It can get a bit morbid the more you go on. I can’t say my entry came like that. But it can and then away I go. Any genre and any subject comes my way and I tackle it when it wants to stay.

Tackle yours and see what happens. You might just find something new that inspires and you enjoy.

So now I am done with my WEP trespass and off I go with my inspiring, hopefully, little rhyming ass.

Enjoy life, forget the strife.

WEP…Write…Edit…Publish – REUNIONS - WINNERS for August 2017

Hello folks!

What a wonderfully extending challenge. The entries were outstanding as always and quite varied because REUNIONS can be approached many ways.  However, there's been some discussion that this challenge raised the bar. I loved that there was some poetry, but as always, the flash fiction dominated. I've read through the entries three times, but it didn't make it any easier to achieve consensus. Finally, Yolanda and I came up with our top three! 

Kudos to Olga Godim, our badge designer, and Nilanjana Bose, our prompt guru!  REUNIONS was one of our most inspiring challenges so far.

I'm about to announce the winners, but I must say, there were more contenders this time than at any other time. In the end, it comes down to who strikes the loudest chord with us as readers -- choosing is so subjective! As always, we take into account the collegiality of the participants. Reading and commenting on each other's posts is crucial to the success of WEP and we're delighted that many of you took the time to do just that. 

In our discussions, Julie Flanders's, The Last Reunion made the short list, as did Pat Garcia's poignant poem, Are You Still a Dreamer? J Lenni Dorner's flash on the miserable life of an outsider, Stew, came under close scrutiny.

But there was so much more -- Donna B McNichol, a first timer at WEP, summed up the decades and her personal growth in her class reunion recount. Lisa Wilton charmed us when she pulled a rabbit out of a hat, and Laura broke outside the box and tried poetry for the first time in many years...then there was Roland's and D.G. Hudson's, Deborah Drucker's, L.G. Keltner's list, Pat Hatt's inclusion of his second WEP entry on Rhyme Time, Christopher Scott, Nancy and Donna's last minute entries. Phew! So  many good reads. 

We love that Pat Hatt gave WEP a heads up for inspiring his latest book, based on a WEP entry. This happens more than you may think. Sometimes a commenter gives us an idea...and away we go...

To quote Pat:  I may as well boast. Thanks to WEP back in April giving me the idea and a few egging me on, I have finished another novel [to add to his 100+) at my sea. Delivered all sprang from the WEP. Goes to show what can happen from 1000 words or less.

Let's not forget our wonderful team members -- Olga and Nila, with their excellent entries, but our policy at WEP is that none of the team are in the running for a prize, sadly at times.
