#WEP 2021 Continues the Artistic Inspiration for October - THE SCREAM! Sign up here. Write your own #tagline!

 Welcome to the October Challenge!

*** ***

The link above opens for submissions on October 20 @ Midnight!

Please Note:

CRITIQUES

This is a most vital part of participation, but it has also proven to be why folks walk away from participation.

Please be courteous with your words!

For the WEP, a critique is:

Constructive feedback or positive reinforcement of the writer while helping reign in problems or giving helpful suggestions.

The point is to be helpful, not hurtful.

The WEP is a place where writers can confidently share their work without fear of harsh words or biting feedback. No matter what the choice is by the author of the type of critique.

Check the Menu Items Under The Critique for more information!

BLURBS ARE BACK, BUT WITH A DIFFERENCE!

We need your help. Give us your own tagline for the piece you've submitted. All writers know it's an essential part of the writing process when giving your pitch or submitting to agents and editors.

So here's your opportunity to practice.

An example of a #tagline from Denise's Paris Dreams novel:

"Sometimes, a new life comes at a cost."

Here's an example from my first novel: Murder, Madness & Love:

"After a gritty detective becomes involved with a beautiful widow, rumor and obsession obstruct his quest for justice."

Short and sweet. A tagline doesn't have to tell the story. It captures the theme. Go on, give it a try!!!!

Jemi Fraser will collect/collate your taglines during the reading process. They will then be posted in the October winners post.

October's Prize:

The October Prize is a Beta Read and critique or a content edit of a short story or novel by Yolanda Renée.

Author of a suspenseful romance series, she's all about keeping the reader guessing and the intensity high.

Her latest novel, A Passion for Murder, was called "A Captivating Thriller" by reviewer Mason Canyon.

THE DECEMBER CHALLENGE

Note the Posting Dates!!!!!!

From our CHALLENGES 2021 PAGE

This one depicts a classic subject by an Italian Master and needs no introduction. Narcissus is a well-known character from Greek mythology – his story has been repurposed and retold all through the ages. Caravaggio was one of the prime movers of the Italian art scene of the 16th/17th century, and a good few of his artworks are based on the classics. He was a controversial figure in his lifetime but has come to be recognized as an artist with far-reaching influence on modern painting. He was a master of chiaroscuro and developed the use of shadows in art.

This particular painting can be interpreted in many ways – will you update Narcissus' story to fit a modern timeline?

Or retell it from a different angle/POV,  perhaps a Narcissa instead?

Explore the mental disorder that is known after Narcissus and its impact on caregivers/physicians/family?

Or perhaps go in a different direction entirely - make Narcissus quite incidental to the story – maybe the painting is only a prop in the setting?

Remember, there is no right or wrong interpretation. You can make the prompt front and center of your entry. Or not. Totally your call. Think out of the box, or rather, frame – and delight us with yours.

Happy writing!

  1. As always, I'm so excited to see what The Scream brings forth from our uber talented writers. Scare us if you will. Or intrigue us with your take on the artwork. It DOESN'T have to be a horror story if that's not your thing. We welcome all entries!

  2. I *think* I am back for this challenge at least. Mind you the #tagline is daunting me.

    1. So glad to hear that - welcome back! And don't let the tagline thingy put you off.

    2. Sue it's wonderful that you could back for this challenge. Have missed your stories x

    3. Sue - If you don't want to do the tagline, we'll come up with one for you -no worries!!

    4. Thanks for your encouragement re the tagline Jemi. I wrote Sue a dissertation on it and the comment didn't take and I couldn't face it again.

I fully expect not everyone will do a tagline this challenge. Perhaps some will wait and see how it works. That's OK.

    5. Oh, you're back. You're definitely back! Heartbreaking but brilliant!!!

  3. This one will be super fun! So looking forward to the entries, creepy and otherwise.

  4. Links in the tweets are now fixed. FYI - change the title, change the links.

Otherwise, it's October and the fun is about to begin. Love it!

    1. So pleased to have you back again Debbie. Wait until December and our 2022 challenge reveal. You'll be in for sure.

  7. This prompt inspired the story that I am writing for consideration in this year's Deathlehem anthology. I will not be submitting a piece to the grid.
I will consider whether or not to share any of my work for this competition in the future. While the core group is nice and professional enough, I've had a couple of negative experiences with people tearing my work apart and it just doesn't feel good.

    1. I'm so sorry to hear this and it makes me incredibly sad. There is a big difference between helpful critique and criticism. I hope you continue to write with us. You would be greatly missed.

    2. I am doubly concerned that you've chosen not to write with us due to bad critiques, but I understand your feelings. Still, I do hope you'll reconsider. I love your contributions and learn something from each post. Please reconsider. Many folks don't understand how to give a proper critique, even though we've got a menu item explaining the rules, many 'assume' they already know what they are doing.

Please help us bring this fact to their attention. Don't allow ignorance to turn you away from a community of writers that truly care.

    3. As I said on your blog, we at WEP are sorry you've had a negative experience. Offering critique isn't a license to tear anyone apart. 😢 We'll need to update our expectations for positive critique again! Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

    4. I am sorry that you've had this awful experience. Please reconsider your decision, please do not deprive the entire community of your contribution due to the errors of one or two people.

  8. Ooh, that sounds like a great prize! I just realized, WEP could really help me a lot during NaNoWriMo, when I'm always on the lookout for inspiration and prompts!

  9. Apologies, but I've deleted the short I'd written for the prompt before posting. I somehow even overwrote all the backup copies too. I haven't even got my synopsis. I'm now hyper stress so it now looks like as I may not post this challenge. Unless, I can do a Robert Louis Stevenson - and ignore my health issues while rewriting.

    1. Oh Roland. I am so sorry that the beast is being her brutal self. Look after yourself please - which is MUCH more important than the challenge. Consider me screaming for and with you.

    2. Thanks Sue. The MonSter wants revenge for something. I'm wanting to scream but the household are all asleep. So crying helps, even if I get told to grow up. I'm attempting to rewrite the piece but I've lost my research links too, so unlikely to recapture what took days to write and hone.

    3. Roland, cry if you want/need to. It is about you, not about other people. Sometimes I view tears as toxins which NEED to be shed. And there is an almost limitless supply. Hugs.

    4. That stinks, Roland! It's so frustrating when your hard work and time disappears like that.
Take care of you first and foremost!
I'll join in the scream-fest with you and Sue

    5. Thanks all. I struggled but re-wrote the short. It needs lots of work - feels like a poor reflection of the destroyed original. I will attempt to improve on it, then post Friday - if that's okay.

    6. So sorry you're suffering a bad patch, Roland, but like Sue said, crying is what's needed at times. My sympathies are with you re the rewrite. Please take your time. If you need a little longer, let us know and we can wave our magic wand over the linky for you.

    7. Roland, I've no doubt that your entry will be fabulous. I'm just sorry it's a struggle at all. Take your time and stay well, we'll gladly wait.

    8. Thanks Denise, for offering 'the magic linky wand'. However, I persevered and have posted a new version.

    9. And thanks everyone for the encouragement - it really helped me through the...................................nightmare.

    10. Roland so glad you persevered and voila! Here you are before the cut off! I hope you're feeling better.

    1. It does not work, I've tried to find a link on the site she used for her last entry, but not there either. So I've sent an email to let her know.

    2. Now Fixed! Please revisit Dixie's entry!

  11. I don't play FB so was unable to comment on Dixie Jarchow's post. I tried to say: Oh my.
And of course your husband slept through it. I am pretty certain it is part of their duty statement.
Well told, though I am not certain that my early morning tummy is ready for it.

  12. For Dixie: I couldn't post my comment either.

OMG, riveting and revolting. I could not deal. In fact, hubby dealt with the vomit or else he have two sites to clean up. I'd vomit too, sight, smell, or just the sound of a retch and I'm a goner.
    Well done!!!!

  13. For Dixie: I don't have FB, so couldn't comment either. My comment is below.

I can just imagine the scene. Sometimes, only a scream would do.
