#WEPFF – BACK OF THE DRAWER FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE – SCANDAL? LOVE? FORTUNE?

Hi, folks! It’s February, and time for the WEP’s first challenge of the year - brought to you by the original imaginings of Nilanjana Bose, the creativity of Olga Godim, and your hosts, Denise Covey and Yolanda Renée! This month, let's go to the...

BACK OF THE DRAWER!

Just the thought that you could open a drawer and find a letter, a deed, a lottery ticket - sparks the imagination! What twist can you give this amazing prompt? Maybe you find a hidden door and open it to find a room full of priceless art? This is the basis of novels on the Paris apartment where exactly this happened. Here's one here!

It does happen! Just recently a man decided to spend a snow day cleaning house. He found a million dollar lottery ticket!

It's up to you! Create an artistic interpretation: a poem, a flash fiction piece of 1000 words or less, a non-fiction piece detailing your personal experience or someone else's experience, write a script, draw your dreams, or post a photograph or a photo essay. The genre is up to you. The artistic choice is yours. A scandal, a lost love found, a deed, a lottery ticket or the last will and testament naming you the sole beneficiary! Go for it!

What will you find at the BACK OF THE DRAWER?

  3. Hi,
I have so many things in the back of my drawer that I'm going to have a hard time choosing from which direction I want to write something about.
Thanks for all the hard work your team puts into this. I look forward to it every time, even when I don't participate.
    Shalom aleichem,
    Pat

    2. Pat, I tried three or four times to comment on your blog but each time, it ate the words. I liked your story a lot, but couldn't break through the comment wall.

  5. Bodies, can we find bodies 'in the back of the drawer, cause I've got a good one.

Guess I'm gonna just have to share it and see what everybody thinks. This is a great prompt. Open for all kind of interpretations. Looking forward to reading these, ss much as writing mine.

  6. I realized I forgot to comment when I signed up! I'll blame my loopiness on the sinus infection I've got going on right now.

This is a great challenge. The drawers around my house have proven time and again that you never know what you'll find in them. I can't wait!

  8. Late to the signup party, but decided to give it a go. I may be twisting the rules a bit to fit the prompt, but it is based on a true story in part.

  16. Just here to apologise for forgetting to add the DL - thanks Denise, Yolanda for adding mine, and sharing. Thanks for all the work!!

Just blown away by the stories, so varied and so good. A-ma-zing!

Cdn't comment over at Pat Gracia's though, made several attempts. Just thought I'd pop in here and say that I loved your heartwarming Valentine story, Pat, if you're reading. Particularly loved the contrast in the POV's of the two characters, and that without actually believing in keepsakes, he still panders to her need for them and leaves her something more of himself to hang onto. Joyous and beautiful.

    1. Yes Nila it did take. There's no message when you publish but it does come up later. I just went by to check. Pat says she's working on getting a message up.

  17. My story is up, Sorry it's late, family issues. I'll be making the rounds but maybe a little late since I also have a lot of critiquing to do and a meeting.

    Enjoy.

  18. Denise, My comment didn't take at Pat Garcia's last night and I tried 3-4 times. Perhaps she has some restriction on who is allowed to comment. I'm not on FB or Twitter and only on Blogger. It's frustrating reading an entry and trying that many times to comment. If it wasn't WEP, I wouldn't have kept trying. Pat's is the only blog I've had a problem with.

    1. I went over and checked. There's a lot of comments from us (me included) saying our comment didn't take, but they did. Yours, however, is nowhere to be seen. I'll tell Pat. She's trying to fix her comment system.

You're right. This sort of thing is a time waster. I hate when it happens. Hopefully Pat will get it right.

  19. Tried three times to leave a comment for Toi Thomas. I accepted the privacy policy, but it still won't accept my comment. Story about that Toi. I try to visit everybody. I thought your story was great, a very different twist on this prompt. Creative, imaginative, and even a little bit gruesome.

    1. Yes, FAE, sometimes there's a problem with comments and there's no reason why that we understand. I'll let Toi know...

      Your comment took at Pat's...

    2. Thanks Denise, after reading some of the other comments I went back to Pat's site to check and my comment DID show up there with no problem, go figure.
